📣 Every Day Counts!

Did you know that when a student is signed out during the school day, it affects their attendance record? Even short absences matter — and we want every student to get credit for their hard work and time in class!

  Here’s how it works:

·       If a student is signed out before 2:00 p.m., it may count as a half-day absence depending on how long they are gone.

·       Students who remain at school until after 2:00 p.m. are considered present for the full day.

·       Each school has its own transition time for when a tardy becomes a half-day absence — please reach out to your school office for those details.

📘 Excused reasons for early sign-outs under WVDE Policy 4110 include:

·       Illness or medical appointment (with documentation)

·       Illness (parent note - limited to 10 days per year)

·       Death in the family

·       Legal obligations or court appearances

·       Religious holiday

·       School-approved curricular or extracurricular activities

 🚫 Unexcused reasons may include:

·       Leaving early without a valid excuse or documentation

·       Personal errands or convenience

·       Oversleeping or missing the bus

·       Family trips

Let’s work together to make sure Every Day Counts — and that every student gets the full benefit of being in school each day! 💚📚

Communities In Schools: Connecting Students to Success

Communities In Schools (CIS) is making a difference every day in Hampshire County Schools by surrounding students with a network of support that helps them stay in school and achieve in life. From removing barriers to learning, like access to clothing, food, or school supplies, to building strong relationships that encourage attendance and engagement, CIS is helping students academically, socially, and emotionally.

Through the Keep the Ball Rolling initiative, each Hampshire County school received $1,500 to support students’ individual needs and strengthen attendance efforts. This funding helps ensure that every student has the resources and encouragement needed to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Hampshire County Schools was proudly represented last week at a local Keep the Ball Rolling event at Keyser High School by:
🏫 Cynthia Morris (SBE)
🏫 Jacqueline McCartney (CBMS)
🏫 Sabrina Dean (RMS)
🏫 Kacey Wolford (IME)
🏫 Stephanie Buckley (CBE)
🏫 Allison McCormick (WRE)
and Emilie Embrey, Director of Student Support Services, representing Hampshire High School.

We are thankful for the ongoing leadership of Cynthia Corbin, CIS Site Coordinator, whose commitment ensures that our students are supported, connected, and inspired to reach their goals.

Last week's event was made possible through the partnership of the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE), Communities In Schools (CIS), and generous sponsors including The Pack Foundation, Wing 2 Wing Foundation, United Way, and L&S Toyota of Beckley—all working together to create brighter futures for West Virginia students.
