Every Day Counts

At Hampshire County Schools, we believe that every day a student is in school is an opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. That's why we've launched our Every Day Counts attendance initiative—a county-wide commitment to helping every student build the habits that lead to lifelong success.

Whether it's mastering a new math skill, participating in a science experiment, performing in a concert, or simply building friendships, students benefit most when they are present and engaged every day.

Why Attendance Matters

Regular school attendance helps students:

  • Build strong academic skills and stay on pace with classroom learning.

  • Develop positive routines and lifelong habits.

  • Build meaningful relationships with teachers and classmates.

  • Increase confidence, engagement, and school connectedness.

  • Graduate prepared for college, careers, and life.

Did you know? Missing just 2 days of school each month can add up to 18 or more days in a school year—enough to be considered chronically absent.

Attendance is a Team Effort

Student success happens when schools and families work together. You can help your child succeed by:

  • Establishing a consistent bedtime and morning routine.

  • Arriving at school on time every day.

  • Scheduling appointments outside of school hours whenever possible.

  • Communicating with your child's school when an absence is necessary.

  • Submitting attendance documentation as soon as your child returns to school.

Understanding Absences

West Virginia Policy 4110 recognizes that students may occasionally need to miss school for legitimate reasons including: illness, medical appointments, and other approved circumstances.

While many absences may be excused, they still result in missed instructional time. Our goal is to minimize missed learning whenever possible while supporting families through challenges that may impact attendance.

When Attendance Becomes a Concern

Hampshire County Schools is committed to partnering with families early. As absences increase, schools provide additional support through communication, problem-solving, and intervention.

Typical attendance supports include:

  • Attendance notification letters

  • School staff outreach to families

  • Attendance conferences

  • Student Assistance Team (SAT) referrals when appropriate

  • Connections to school and community resources

Our goal is always to identify barriers and work together to keep students connected to school.

Need Help?

We understand that health concerns, housing instability, family emergencies, and other challenges can make regular attendance difficult.

If your family is experiencing barriers that affect your child's attendance, please contact your child's school. Our staff is ready to help connect you with available resources and supports.
